L'eau pomp\u00e9e dans le bassin de filtration par la pompe de circulation contient beaucoup d'excr\u00e9ments de ko\u00ef et de r\u00e9sidus d'aliments, qui se fixent sur le mat\u00e9riau filtrant apr\u00e8s la filtration. Un mat\u00e9riau filtrant vraiment \u00e9cologique et naturel h\u00e9berge de nombreux micro-organismes b\u00e9n\u00e9fiques qui d\u00e9composent (mangent) les d\u00e9bris. Lorsque la concentration d'oxyg\u00e8ne dissous dans l'eau diminue, les micro-organismes ne peuvent pas se reproduire et leur nombre diminue brusquement. Cependant, lorsque les micro-organismes se multiplient, la quantit\u00e9 d'oxyg\u00e8ne consomm\u00e9e augmente, et si l'oxyg\u00e8ne n'est pas introduit dans le m\u00e9dia filtrant, les micro-organismes meurent soudainement en raison du manque d'oxyg\u00e8ne. L'oxyg\u00e8ne est introduit dans le m\u00e9dia filtrant dans le sens o\u00f9 un flux d'eau se forme dans le m\u00e9dia filtrant.
